Movie - Giant Monster Varan, Varan the Unbelievable.

Released October 14th, 1958.

Directed by Ishiro Honda.

Monster Stars - Varan.

Toho ltd.

With Kaiju films becoming one of TOHO’s main trademarks in the Japanese movie industry, the creators behind the glory of Godzilla decide to create another monster that could only ever bring more glory to the TOHO name. A Japanese edition was aired in America and a revised version in theaters with a heavily re-edited american cast and story line. However, with a unique back story to this incredible work of black and white mastery film, it was overshadowed by the still emanating glory of Godzilla.

Plot - When a discovery team is lost to what seems to be powerful force, a larger expedition team is sent. Their arrival is met with a terrible omen spun by the natives. Words of a mountain god named Baradagi - Sanjin flow along with the reasons for the deaths of the earlier exploratory team. However, the next team sent in is sent with the funding power of 20th Century Mysteries Solved, a film company with firm reporters and the sister of one of the men killed in the first team. Yuriko, the sister of the fallen explorer along with an entomologist named Kenji, both envelope themselves within the desire to learn more and more about the island regardless of the natives warnings. However, as the expedition team finds themselves in trouble, the natives minus the local priest rush to the aid of the teams. While a slight moment is given in relief to the saving of the expedition team, it is cut short when the monster Varan emerges from Kitakami river to wreak havoc on the men who dared to question too much. Will Japan be able to survive and dig themselves out of the new grave they have dug themselves?

Personal rating - No rating yet = I have yet to acquire the means of which to view this movie however, the unique back story is itself original and is morphed into what the mothra series takes off in. Most of them mimicking what Varan showed. Unfortunately, I will scold the film for its use of stock footage from the original Godzilla film. A more detailed review will be out as soon as possible.
