Episode 9: Hemp For Victory!

An odd short film from 1942 produced by the US Army and the Department of Agriculture where they actually encouraged farmers to grow hemp! Admittedly it was for the war effort since the Japanese had occupied most of the territory that produced other fibers.

It makes for a great how-to on how to grow your own hemp.

Episode 7: Night of the Living Dead!

The film that is singularly responsible for starting the zombie apocalypse genre. Turning the zombie from a mindless slave of Voodoo legends into a flesh-eating plague! This film makes many top 10 lists of some of the scariest and most influential horror films of all time. The film is a perfect piece of satire about race ( the fate of Ben) and the Vietnam War (just listen to Ben describing what happened at Beakman’s Diner. He sounds like a war shocked veteran retelling and reliving a horrific battle).

It was also among only a small number of films in the 60s that added blood and gore to the mix ( others being “Blood Feast” and “2000 Maniacs” to name a few).

Unfortunately, the distributor changed the films title card and forgot to put the copyright on ( according to the copyright laws at the time, the copyright info had to be displayed with the title card). The film then lapsed into the public domain and George A. Romero and company barely saw any money from it.

Episode 6:The Street Fighter!

starring Sonny Chiba

“If you have to fight, FIGHT DIRTY!”

Sonny Chiba in an awesome martial arts film! Terry Tsurugi is a hired gun and bodyguard. When he refuses a job on principle he finds himself on the opposite side of the yakuza and protected the woman he was supposed to kidnap for them!

This is one of Quentin Tarantino’s favorite films and appears prominently in “True Romance”. And video game fans will recognize it from the game “The Darkness”.

“You beat a man, they call you tough! You beat an army, they call you THE STREET FIGHTER!”

Episode 3: The Satanic Rites of Dracula

starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing

The only Hammer Films movie that is in the PD. It is a direct sequel to “Dracula 1972 AD” with Count Dracula resurrected in modern day London. Dracula is the leader of a satanic cult made up of Britain’s wealthy and powerful. Dracula’s master plan involves wiping out all human life on Earth with a powerful strain of Black Plague his minions created for him.

It is easily available online and on DVD. The best is a double feature DVD with “Dracula, Prince of Darkness” published by Anchor Bay.

Episode 1: Horror Express (aka Pánico en el Transiberiano/Panic on the Trans-Siberian Express)

Starring Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Telly Savalas

In 1906, a British anthropologist finds an ape-like creature in a cave in northern China. He ships it on the Trans-Siberian Express where it comes to life and starts killing passengers. Whats worse is that it is not the creature itself but a malevolent entity that possesses it. Its sort of like “John Carpenter’s The Thing” set on a train in Czarist Russia.
