Episode 24: Mutant! (aka Night Shadows)

Bad but interesting entry in the zombie genre. This film began life as a script that ripped off Stephen King’s “The Stand” and eventually evolved in what you see here… The best they could do.

The film focuses on two brothers driving through rural Georgia. They get stranded in a small town when some rednecks they offended run them off the road. It becomes clear that the town is hiding something. That something is that a chemical manufacturing corporation has been dumping toxic waste down a mine shaft and it is leaking into the local water supply, mutating the locals into zombie-like creatures that spew acidic goo and suck blood.

This movie is bad but it should keep you entertained. It was directed by John “Bud” Cardos who directed other cult B-movies like “Kingdom of the Spiders” and “The Dark”. Dick Clark was a producer on the film though he was uncredited. An unofficial sequel was made called “Alien Predators” in 1987 and a loose remake called “Nightmare at Noon” with some of the same cast.

The film also boasts an awesome score by Richard Band.

Episode 22: The News Parade: Fighting For Rome/Russia’s Smashing Offensive!

Not an actual film or short, but a newsreel from the Second World War. This one covers events in the Italian Campaign and the Eastern Front with American and British troops in the bloody battle to take Monte Cassino, and as the Red Army launches Operation Bagration to push the Nazis out of Soviet territory.

Episode 21: Grave of the Vampire! (aka Seeds of Terror!)

Instead of Oedipus the King in this 1972 horror film, its Oedipus the Count!

Several years after his death by electrocution in the late 1930s, ghoulish rapist/murderer Caleb Croft (Michael Pataki) rises from his crypt and brutally assaults young Leslie Hollander (Kitty Vallacher). Leslie becomes pregnant by Croft and delivers a baby boy, whom she nurses with bottles of blood. The child matures into the ruggedly handsome James Eastman (William Smith), who sets out on a mission to find and kill his diabolical father. Eastman enrolls in a college, where his father is teaching as Professor Lockwood. Following a séance hosted by the professor for his students, James confronts his father in a showdown between good and evil.

Episode 19: US Army Training Film: M-14 Rifle, 7.62mm Operation and Cycling T. F. 9 2970

That’s mouthful of a title. This is a US Army training film made to familiarize American soldiers with the operation, use and maintenance of the M14 battle rifle. The film uses field use footage along with animation and over sized mock ups of the weapon’s internal mechanism to show how exactly it works. This rifle was first introduce in 1957 as the US armed forces standard rifle until it was replaced by the M16 in the mid ‘60s. But, it has recently made a comeback first as a marksman rifle and its original battle rifle configuration.

A civilian, semi-automatic version called the M1A is still in production and is very popular. So civilian users can get an up close and personal guide to maintenance for it.

Episode 18: Boys Beware!

This short film, along with the previous short I posted “Perversion For Profit”, is a bit heavier than the usual fare. This short film was produced to warn young boys that gay men will pick them up and molest them.

A piece of shameless, bigoted Anti-Gay propaganda who’s skewed and wrong message is that all gay men are pedophiles and are dangerously mentally ill. A sick idea still perpetuated today by many ultra-right wing and conservative elements like the American Family Association and the KKK.

A portrait of a time when homosexuals were even more openly persecuted than they are today. Then again if one looks too closely its still this bad!

Episode 16: Perversion For Profit!

An odd ball short warning of the “evils” of pornography! Because it apparently turns America’s youth into a rabble of gay, homicidal, communist delinquents!

Like most short propaganda films like this, it is completely insane and out of touch with reality. It is especially telling of the people who made it and the time it was produced by its denouncement of homosexuality. On the other hand it goes to show you that most anti-gay people are in fact closet cases themselves when they claim that: reading muscle magazines and men’s heath magazines make young boys gay, and . Its one of the most obvious cases of projecting one’s secret desires onto others. It makes the argument the pictures of butts promote sodomy, that picture of a model in a farm yard promotes bestiality.

And porn is not just a threat to out Judeo-Christian WASP conservative white-supremacist values! It weakens us in our fight against communism!

And to think people! This was before the invention of the internet!

Episode15: Final Curtain!

A short film by Ed Wood made to be the pilot for a series that would have been called “Portraits of Terror”, a Twilight Zone like series of different horror stories. The film is about an actor experiencing strange and supernatural occurrences in an empty theater after dark.

It stars Duke Moore and is narrated by Dudley Manlove, both starred in Wood’s “Plan 9 From Outer Space”.

Episode 14: Trick Shooting With Kenne Duncan!

A 1960 short film directed by none other than Ed Wood! Starring his long time friend and collaborator Kenne Duncan, showing off some very impressive marksmanship.

This film was made mostly as promotion for Remmington rifles and ammunition, particularly their Model 552 rifle and Nylon 66 rifle, both .22 caliber.

This film may be Wood’s most competently direct film of his entire filmography. After Kenne is finished with his trick shots, the film is concluded with footage of his trip to Japan.

Episode 12: Lady Frankenstein!

Another screen adaptation of the Mary Shelley novel, but this one was unique for its levels of sex and violence, as well as its female lead. Often considered feminist science fiction/horror film because the focus is not on Baron Frankenstein in this version but his daughter, challenging 19th century gender roles by being a brilliant surgeon and a femme fatale.

Tania Frankenstein returns home from medical school and takes over her father’s work when his creation kills him and goes on a rampage. Using her brilliant mind and beautiful face and body, she sets out to prove to the world that her father was a genius!

The trailer to this film was sampled at the beginning of Rob Zombie’s song “Living Dead Girl”. The film was originally distributed by Roger Corman of this Italian horror film.

Rivaled only by “Curse of Frankenstein” and “Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein” in its combination of sex, violence and gothic horror.

Episode10: Reefer Madness!

Produced by the FBI to warn young people about the dangers of smoking weed, which according to this film include homicidal violence, murder suicide and hopeless insanity. Its hard to say if its blatant misinformation is based on ignorance or lies, or possibly both. A favorite of stoners and people who like terrible movies.
