2015 was a rough year for losing horror icons, and unfortunately 2016 is off to an equally heartbreaking start. Genre legend Angus Scrimm has passed away at the age of 89.

Scrimm is best known for portraying The Tall Man in Phantasm and its four sequels. The cult franchise’s final entry, Phantasm V: Ravager, is due out later this year. Fittingly, it will be Scrimm’s final role.

His other credits include Subspecies, Wishmaster, I Sell the Dead, John Dies at the End, Chopping Mall, The Lost Empire, Munchie, Transylvania Twist and Scream Bloody Murder, among others.

A little known fact about Scrimm: he spent years working at Capitol Records writing the liner notes for such acts as Frank Sinatra and The Beatles. He even earned a Grammy in 1974 for his notes on Korngold: The Classic Erich Wolfgang Korngold.

While we await the release of Phantasm V, the original film has recently been restored in 4K high-definition under the supervision of J.J. Abrams and director Don Coscarelli.
