That’s what they originally looked like. When the Pyramids were built, they were covered by white marble flag stones. When the sun hit them they could be seen for miles around.
When Egypt was conquered by the Arabs in the Middle Ages, the flag stones were ripped off and used to make the masques of Cairo.
