City Coyotes by Sean Crane

I photographed these two coyotes within the city limits of Los Angeles. Granted they were in the expansive Griffith Park, but nice to see such healthy looking creatures so close to civilization. It was first thing in the morning when I was hiking in the park and came across these two coyotes, plus another, howling.

Saw a Coyote

Monday night I saw a coyote outside my apartment.

I am on the third floor of a split level building. So on the north side, I am technically on the second floor from the ground. I walked out onto the walkway balcony to go to the laundry room when I looked up and say him on the hill opposite of me, across the parking lot.

He stood in the pale blueish light of the full moon just as plain as day. He was huge too! Almost as big as a German Shepherd. A magnificent animal.

If I was thinking straight I should have crept carefully back inside and got my camera, but I was so freaked out at seeing a coyote that close to me and that close to town that my only reaction was to yell at him and slam my door to scare him off. It seems harsh, but it was not because I was afraid of him, but because no good could come to him being that close to town. He took off into the trees.

His size is probably a good indication that he is well fed. But, if he is coming that close to town, food must be becoming harder to come by now that winter is setting in,

I don’t want him to come to any harm but it would be nice to see him again.
