Anubis & the Bride, 2018

Anubis & the bride portrays the Egyptian god of the dead seated on a throne beside his new bride. In his right hand he holds an embalming jar, symbol of his trade. His bride is adorned with a pearl necklace and a blue veil streaming down her sides like the flow of the Nile. By her side is Bastet, the goddesses of protection and cats and the defender of the pharaoh and behind her is Taweret, the goddess of childbirth and fertility whose animal form is a Hippopotamus. They are in turn surrounded by the beasts and landscape of Egypt, with the Nile and its activity visible in the upper right corner.

Painting by P.J. Crook (English, b.1945). Tinted gesso on canvas and wood.

Finally got around to some artwork for Yinepu! This was inspired by a scene in the TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “American Gods” with Anubis and a recently deceased individual. I tried to capture the mystical feeling that the story imparted. Hopefully it worked! Prints available here.
