Twenty years ago, following the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement, a group of insurgent farmers seized several towns in Mexico’s Chiapas state. The Zapatistas, who named their movement after the Mexican revolutionary figure Emiliano Zapata, called for a new revolution in the country. Complete political autonomy never came to fruition, but the group continues to exist as a collective of 35 self-governed communities.
