On this day, 25 February 1986, the US-backed, anti-communist dictator of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos was toppled and forced to flee the country by mass protests in the “people power revolution”. During just the last decade of his 20-year rule, he was responsible for the murders of at least 3257 people, as well as the torture of 35,000 people and arrested tens of thousands more.
