Cities across the country were bracing for protests once video is released on Friday showing Memphis police officers fatally injuring Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop earlier this month. Mayor Jim Strickland of Memphis said city officials had made sure Mr. Nichols’s family could view the video privately before it was released to the public. He said the city expected to do so after 6 p.m. on Friday.
Like many police forces across the country, the New York Police Department was heavily criticized for its handling of protests after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020. The city’s Department of Investigation found that the department had used aggressive tactics that heightened tensions and violated demonstrators’ rights.
