Today, 26 January, in Australia is Invasion Day (aka: Australia Day, Survival Day, or Day of Mourning). While for the colonialist state it marks the 1788 landing of the British First Fleet at Sydney Cove, since at least 1938 the date has been marked by Indigenous Australians and supporters to mourn the invasion of the land by the British and the start of colonisation, protesting its celebration as a national holiday. Invasion Day is observed by many as a counter-observance to Australia Day, with calls for the date of the latter to be changed or the holiday to be abolished entirely.
