On this day, 4 January 1901, CLR James, anti-colonial activist, socialist historian, theorist, journalist and cricket aficionado, was born in Trinidad. In his masterful history of the Haitian revolution, The Black Jacobins, James remarked: “When history is written as it ought to be written, it is the moderation and long patience of the masses at which men will wonder, not their ferocity.”
