On this day, 23 December 1961, Dutch Spanish civil war volunteer Fanny Schoonheyt, known as “la reina de la ametralladora” – the queen of the machine gun – died. She was the only woman fighter from the Netherlands who directly fought against general Francisco Franco and the fascists. She went to the Aragon front and served until she was wounded in action.
