On this day, 9 October 2010, Sahrawi people set up the Gdeim Izik protest camp about 12 km south-east of Laâyoune, in protest at the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara and continued mistreatment of Sahrawis. At its height, the camp housed 15,000 people, with its own self-organised health the, schools and even a prison.
Moroccan authorities violently raided the camp on 8 November, destroying it. Sahrawis claimed that authorities also killed upwards of 30 people and injured over 700, whereas Morocco only acknowledged the deaths of two civilians. Sahrawi people resisting the attack resulted in the deaths of 11 members of Morocco’s security forces.
Hundreds of people were arrested, and 25 subsequently convicted in a military court of membership of a “criminal gang” and jailed for sentences of 20 years to life imprisonment. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/2104114426440363/?type=3
