“HORREO” - a typical barn for storing cereals. Most of them are in Galicia and a little less in Spain. There are similar granaries in France, the British Isles, and Scandinavia. They are built of stone or wood, but must be raised from the ground, on poles. Thus, stored cereals are protected from rodents. Most often they have a rectangular and square shape. Ventilation is provided by slots in the walls. Written documents show that they date from the 13th century. The oldest one in existence dates back to the 15th century.
