On this day, 16 August 1819, the Peterloo massacre took place in St Peter’s Field, Manchester, when British cavalry charged into a crowd of between 60,000 and 80,000 working class people demanding the right to vote for men. Between 15 and 18 people were killed and up to 700 injured.
