My colleagues and I were absolutely awestruck by these images yesterday, and that’s quite a feat. We’ve been salivating over the prospect of JWST data for YEARS, but seeing the images made us take a step back and just be giddy about space for a bit.

I encourage you to go to NASA’s flickr page to click through to the full size images. It’s truly mind-boggling. Every little smudge and bright pixel in the background of the SMACS and Stephan’s Quintet photos is an entire galaxy!!

Personally, I was absurdly excited about the WASP-96b spectrum because even this supposedly “cloud-free” exoplanet is showing evidence of clouds in its JWST spectrum. That means me and my cloudy inverse models still have job!

Sidenote: please refer to the telescope as JWST and not its proper name. It’s named after an administrator who lead the lavender scare in the state department and oversaw the firing of queer scientists at NASA. Short documentary here. #RenameJWST
