Important update on abortion rights in Texas: the Bexar county sheriff said he won’t prosecute anyone who gets an abortion

Saw someone in the tags saying please don’t be fake so just so we’re clear:

a screenshot from The Houston Chronicle that is headlined “Bexar County Sheriff will not ‘persecute’ San Antonio women who have abortions”, followed by a subline that reads “Salazar says it’s none of his business”. There is a photo of the sheriff in uniform with his cowboy hat in hand as he speaks to the press. there are cars in the background of the shotALT
a facebook post from Sheriff Javier Salazar that reads "“I’m the Sheriff of Bexar County, but also a Dad of two beautiful and intelligent young women. As their Dad I will defend my daughter’s ability to do what they feel is right with their bodies and to love whomever they choose. As their Dad, I have no control over their adult bodies. As their Sheriff, it is absolutely none of my business. I will not persecute Texas women or anyone else pursuing those same rights. Shame on the Supreme Court and the bureaucrats in Washington D.C. and Austin who are attempting to impose their own supposed morals on others. They will not use my badge or the color of my office to do so. My job is chasing predators, rapists, and human traffickers, not someone exercising a right. If it’s religion those career politicians would like to enforce, then they should remember that there are many other commandments in scripture that they themselves have very publicly chosen to ignore. If it’s truly about protecting children, how about starting with the ones in our schools?” the post is then followes by a picture lf the sheriff with his daughters and wife.ALT

It’s worth noting that San Antonio is the second biggest city and has the third largest metropolitan area in the state. Bexar county takes up majority if not all of the city. This impacts at least 1.4mil people. This is a very good thing the sheriff is doing.

(tags: #also this is one of the 10 largest cities in the country #THE COUNTRY)

7th biggest, to be exact! Also the city of council of Austin is putting forth legislation to decriminalize abortion in the city, affecting just under 1mil people.

Austin and San Antonio are about an hour’s drive a part, with the surrounding metro areas of both cities having a combined population of about 4.8 million people (2.28 mil and 2.55mil, respectively), providing two abortion havens of some type for the time being

Majority of Texans live within the Texas Triangle, so it provides a small sliver of hope for about a ¼ of those that do live in the region. Hopefully El Paso and the other two major cities follow, I’m especially wanting Houston to take action

In related news, a lower court blocked the trigger law Texas had in place, reinstating the 5 week ban over the total ban that was going to go into effect this month

The Travis county (Austin), Dallas county, Ft Bend county (Sugar Land), and Nueces county (Corpus Christi) DAs also said they will not prosecute abortion cases.

Curious that Harris County (Houston) DA, Kim Ogg who is a Democrat btw, has said she will prosecute cases. But, Fort Bend (where I grew up) is a Houston suburb that’s a 10-15 minute drive from Downtown Houston and they said they will not.

Update on the courts: The Texas Supreme Court blocked the lower court’s decision, allowing the trigger law that is going to go in effect later this month that completely bans abortions to remain in effect :/
