The Indigenous leader Leonidas Iza on Tuesday demanded–among other things–that the government eliminate the emergency decree and remove the military and police presence around places where protesters have gathered in Quito.

But the minister of government on Wednesday said the government could not lift the state of emergency because it would leave “the capital defenseless”.

I would like to clarify I just saw a live video of police throwing tear gas at a crowd of protesters that were peaceful, and that the protest are populated by a variety of people other than the indigineous groups. I would also like to inform that the president has expressed that he wouldn’t mind if the police killed people when repressing protests. Actually, let me give you a literal translation:

“If in the conflict for order people have to die, I would much rather people on the other side fall rather than our forces.”

So it would be pretty ballsy to call the protestors the violent side in all this.

I have no idea how to help these sort of situations other than calling attention to them, so if you could take a moment to see whats going on in Ecuador, I would appreacite it. I would appreaciate if people would look up the reasons for the protests, which include but are not limited to: Lack of supplies in public schools, rise in fuel prices, rise in food prices, lowering of minimun wage, lack of efficiency in public services, prison unrest, and illegal arrests.
