What makes the western spadefoot (Spea hammondii) an “explosive” breeder?🐸

When it’s time to mate, the nocturnal amphibians become diurnal, emerge from their burrows, and occupy rain pools (or other temporary bodies of water created by seasonal rains). Males make loud calls to attract a mate. A female can lay more than 600 eggs, which she will attach to foliage; offspring can hatch as quickly as within five days! You might spot this toad in parts of California.
