On this day, 13 May 1910, revolutionary Emiliano Zapata’s peasant army began the Battle of Cuautla during the Mexican Revolution. Despite suffering hundreds of losses, the Zapatistas took the town seven days later, and the defeat convinced the dictator Porfirio Díaz to sign the Treaty of Ciudad Juárez and step down as leader.
