On this day, 4 February 1987, Afghan political and women’s rights activist Meena Keshwar Kamal was assassinated in Pakistan. She founded the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) in Kabul in 1977, whose mission was to “give voice to the deprived and silenced women of Afghanistan” and taught Afghan women how to read and write. Two men subsequently confessed to her murder, who were both linked to the KHAD secret police agency under Soviet occupation. Kamal and RAWA opposed the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. RAWA’s work continues, though mostly in secret due to the rule of the Taliban. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1913671448817996/?type=3
