On this day, 30 December 1936, 50 workers at the Flint General Motors plant sat down on wildcat strike against the forcible transfer of three inspectors who had been ordered to quit the union, but refused. On top of that, Walter P Reuther died at the onset of the 1970s and as leader of the UAW he made significant efforts to keep the union clean. This also coincided with liberal thought leaders who were generally anti corruption among public and union officials, like RFK. A perfect storm for the decline in quality of the union.

@deergirlanarchist lotta people have discussed why the UAW fell from most progressive and cleanest union to the current status and a huge part of it is that the labor laws passed in the early 50s would stop a new UAW from ever being created - Wildcat strikes, like the Flint sit-down, were banned and in the same era many unions had to exile their communist, anarchist, and even socialist aligned leadership in an era of McCarthyism and a reactionary FBI.
