workingclasshistory:

On this day, 30 December 1936, 50 workers at the Flint General Motors plant sat down on wildcat strike against the forcible transfer of three inspectors who had been ordered to quit the union, but refused. When workers noticed management make preparations to transfer production elsewhere, the mostly non-union workforce occupied the plant, and defied court injunctions and violent attacks from guards and police holding out till February when the company caved in, granted union recognition and the balance of power between workers and bosses was decisively changed.

This also coincided with liberal thought leaders who were generally anti corruption among public and union officials, like RFK. A perfect storm for the decline in quality of the union.
