Radio Blue Heart is on the air!

The city of Hickory NC has put up signs at most major intersections discouraging citizens to give to panhandlers. The sign says that giving them money "does not change their situation". What does change their situation then?

That kind of anti homeless shit is so common in this fucking state it’s disgusting. For those who don’t know Raleigh the capital of NC is basically criminalizing homelessness and though not legally so far it has spread to other metropolitan areas in the state. Giving homeless people is always worth it, you may be the sole reason they eat that day. “But drugs” who cares, I’m not homeless but if someone gave me 100$ out of nowhere I’d spend it on weed but that’s not assumed of me, why is it for someone who has no income or home? And even if they do spend it on drugs, that’s a victim of extreme poverty, they need help not criticism. The best answer to homelessness is of course, like all things, structural. Homes should be a right, renting should be rent to own only. There are more than enough homes in America for that, some are laying empty and rotting while people die in the streets. How do you help the homeless? The poor, your neighbor your friend? Revolution. We must change the system in order to help the people, you can do all you want under the system but until the homeless sleep under roofs there ain’t shit gonna change long term. That isn’t to say you shouldn’t volunteer and do what little you can to help them in the meantime though, give that homeless person you see some pocket money, fuck what people say we help us and no matter what you have more in common with that homeless person than any capitalist dickhead.

My wife and I have a handful of gallon size freezer bags in our cars with basic toiletries, spare socks, water, and energy bars plus like $5 in each bag. Pass em out to anyone panhandling at red lights and stuff whenever we can. Buy it in bulk so the most “expensive” thing in the bag is the cash. Like to think it helps but it feels like the bare minimum you can do honestly.
