On this day, 16 December 1908 Mexican-Catalan revolutionary, anti-fascist and surrealist artist Remedios Varo was born. She was active during the Spanish civil war and revolution of 1936, and eventually moved to Paris to escape the fighting. After the Nazi occupation of France she was put in a concentration camp until she was rescued and was able to flee to Mexico.
