Fayum Mummy Portraits

The Fayum mummy portraits were lifelike images painted on thin wooden panels and placed directly over the mummy in Roman Egypt. The vast majority of them date to the 1st and 2nd centuries CE. Hundreds of mummy portraits have been excavated, and the largest collection outside Egypt is housed in the Petrie Museum in London.
