On this day, 22 September 1960 at 5 AM, bailiffs backed up by 800 police attacked two blocks of council flats in St Pancras, London to evict two communists who had been withholding payment of a rent increase for over 8 months. Other tenants rushed from their flats to fight the police, and were joined by around 300 building and warehouse workers who went on strike to support them. By the evening a crowd of 14,000 had formed who marched on the town hall and were violently attacked by police.
