On this day, 13 September 1879, Annie Kenney, cotton mill worker and pioneering direct action suffragette was born. She came to prominence in 1905 when she and her friend, and some historians have speculated possibly lover, Christabel Pankhurst were imprisoned for assault and obstruction after heckling the Foreign Secretary at a Liberal rally. This sparked the adoption of militant tactics across the movement.
