On this day, 4 August 2011, Mark Duggan was shot and killed by the London Metropolitan police. When the incident first happened, the Independent Police Complaints Commission, the supposedly independent body which is tasked with investigating police misconduct, claimed that Duggan had opened fire on a police officer, who was only saved due to the bullet hitting his police radio. It later became clear that the IPCC was lying, that Duggan never fired, and that the police officer was shot by one of his colleagues. In spite of this, the IPCC was still put in charge of investigating Duggan’s death. In response to the killing, days of rioting broke out across England, in a British precursor to the #blacklivesmatter movement.
