On this day, 22 June 1908, the Red Flag Incident took place in Tokyo, Japan, marking the beginning of the move of the imperial government to crush the socialist movement. Celebrated anarchist Koken Yamaguchi was released from prison and was met by crowds waving red flags carrying anarchist communist and revolutionary slogans, and singing communist songs. Police violently attacked and broke up the demonstration and arrested 14 prominent activists including Kanno Sugako (pictured) later giving most of them lengthy prison terms.
