Planet of the Vampires (Italy, 1965) dir. by Mario Bava

Before the special effects boom, Mario Bava made a sci-fi with effects in-camera, legit sick lighting and mod-as-hell costume design.  The story is familiar to anyone who’s seen Alien as that film clearly lifted some plot points… derelict spacecraft transmitting a distress signal on dark rocky planet, our crew lands and bad things happen.  There’s even a giant-skulled navigator skeleton.  While nowhere near as scary, and more zombie than vampire, still a good moody Italian classic from the 60s.
