──── EGYPTOLOGISTS ────

Caroline Louise Ransom Williams (1872–1952) not only attended the University of Chicago, receiving an MA in classical archaeology and Egyptology, but she was encouraged by James Henry Breasted to follow in his footsteps to study in Berlin, making her one of the first women in Europe to study Egyptology. Not long after, Caroline returned to University of Chicago to become the first American woman to receive an advanced degree in Egyptology, writing her doctoral dissertation under Breasted. Keeping a close relationship with Breasted, Caroline went on to work at a variety of institutions, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1926, she accepted Breasted’s offer to work on the Epigraphic Survey in Egypt, where she was an epigrapher at the great mortuary temple of Ramses III until 1927; she later worked in Egypt (1935–1936) on the Coffin Texts project at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. [X]
