On this day, 26 May 1970, Black auto worker and Vietnam war veteran Gary Thompson was killed at the Eldon Chrysler plant in Detroit. There had been a catalogue of safety failings in the plant which led to his death, which was far from unique in the factory. Many workers responded by walking out on a wildcat strike the next day, partly organised by the League of Revolutionary Black Workers.
