They number less than 5000 individuals across Africa, making this very capable carnivore one of the most at risk of extinction on the continent. Classified as Endangered by the IUCN, their main threats are persecution through human-wildlife conflict, habitat destruction in the wake of human expansion and their fragmented populations being vulnerable to being struck by disease outbreaks.
