On this day, 18 May 2020, 14 year old Black Brazilian teenager João Pedro Matos Pinto was killed by police in his aunt’s home as officers raided their Rio favela.
Armed police surrounded the house, containing six children, and riddled it with bullets, hitting Pinto in the back and killing him. They then took his body, put it into a helicopter and flew it 25 miles away. It was reported that police claimed he was killed accidentally in a crossfire with gang members.
In the wake of the killing, as well as the US police murder of George Floyd, protesters took to the streets chanting “Vidas negras importam!” (“Black lives matter!”). https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1719578424893967/?type=3
