Until the coronavirus pandemic, Amtrak’s 20,000 employees carried almost 32 million passengers annually. The railroad’s Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C., and a few other lines offer frequent service. But for most people in the United States passenger trains are just a memory.
