On this day, 18 April 1912, miners in Paint Creek, West Virginia, went on strike after employers refused their demand for wages equal to those of other mines. They were joined by miners from nearby Cabin Creek. The stoppage continued for over a year, with many killed in clashes between miners, company thugs and state militia.
