According to the John Birch Society, the Civil Rights Movement was part of “an international communist conspiracy” and the first step toward “a totalitarian state in America.” The John Birch Society was founded by the owner of Junior Mints with Fred Koch, the father of the Koch Brothers.
Reminds me of this analysis on the development of far right politics in the US, particularly libertarianism and anticommunism. It all originated in opposition to civil rights, and is promoted under the guise of individual freedom to this day.
