On this day, 15 April 1973, thousands of members of the United Farm Workers union walked out on strike in California’s Coachella and San Joaquin valleys.
The workers, mostly Filipine and Chicane, were battling the Teamsters union over the right to represent farm workers. The Teamsters had signed a sweetheart deal with employers, with no elections and very few members.
Though hundreds of strikers were beaten and arrested, others shot and two murdered, the dispute ended with victory, yet again, for the UFW. The Teamsters again conceded jurisdiction to the UFW, which they had previously done on multiple occasions. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1695159030669240/?type=3
