William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918)
William was a poet and a horror and science fiction writer who also got into bodybuilding when he joined the navy. By his own admission he had to learn to defend himself, being short yet very good looking…He achieved notoriety in both fields with a military career under his belt, but that wasn’t enough.
He was also interested in photography and is known to be the first person to have recorded a cyclone at sea. Unfortunately, the Great War did what it did best with him and many more like him.
Wanting nothing to do anymore with the sea he enlisted in the Royal Artillery. In 1916 he fell off a horse, injured his head and broke his jaw. Once recovered he re-enlisted. At Ypres he lost his life to a shell while leading a group of NCOs to safety.
