On this day, 15 March 1919, thousands of women in Egypt marched in protest against the British occupation. In particular the arrest and deportation to Malta of Saad Zaghlul, a prominent Egyptian politician, and several other activists caused widespread outrage, and boosted anti-colonial sentiment. It was an early event in the Egyptian revolution which would eventually topple British rule.
