On this day, 15 March 1960, a protest took place in Masan, South Korea, against electoral corruption under the US-backed dictatorship of Syngman Rhee. About a thousand people protested outside the headquarters of the Democratic Party around 7:30 PM. Police arrived and began firing teargas at the crowd, who responded by throwing rocks at the police. The following month, the body of a young protester, Kim Ju-yul (pictured), would be discovered which triggered mass protests across the country which toppled the dictatorship in the April revolution.
