A few of the choice pieces exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art show “Engineer, Agitator, Constructor” about avant garde and revolutionary art in the wake of World War 1 and the Russian Revolution.
Quite a few pieces I haven’t seen before, especially by Soviet women artists. It’s very interesting to see how Soviet constructivist ideas radiated out into Europe. Also fascinating to see the attempts of capitalist advertising to co-opt the radical forms, and how hollow and tepid they were by comparison.
The show runs through April 10. If you go early on a weekday, you’ll have it mostly to yourself.
