The sad thing is, according to their “Behind the Music” episode, that Metallica gained notoriety in the Bay Area music scene because people traded in bootleg cassette tapes of their demos and concerts. It didn’t stop people from going to their shows, buying their albums and buying everything in then world with Metallica printed on it.
