Nearly seven in 10 NYC jobs lost in 2020 were held by people of color, according to a study released Friday by the New School’s Center for New York City Affairs.
People of color accounted for 68% of the estimated 750,000 jobs lost, economist James Parrott found.
He arrived at the jaw-dropping figure by comparing official unemployment rates by sector and the percentage of people of color in those businesses.
While Wall Street, tech and other high-paying sectors largely survived 2020 unscathed, lower-paying fields like retail, nail salons, barbershops, hotels and restaurants were devastated.
That left New Yorkers of color in the lurch, Parrott found.
