On this day, 17 February 1964, a nationwide strike of sugar workers broke out in Guyana demanding recognition for the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union from the Sugar Producers’ Association. The white-owned British companies, in what was then a British colony, used Black scab workers to try to break the strike of the predominantly East Indian workers, which worsened racial tensions in the country, and culminated in killings of Asians later in the year.
