On this day, 24 January 1977 the Atocha massacre took place in Madrid when 9 left-wing lawyers were shot in an attack by fascists. They entered the offices of the CCOO union with machine guns looking for a communist transport strike organiser. When they couldn’t find him they shot one lawyer and lined 8 others up against a wall and shot them, killing 5 and seriously wounding the others including a pregnant woman.
On the exact same day elsewhere in the city, 21-year-old student María Luz Nájera Julián was killed by police during a demonstration against the fascist murder of a left-wing bricklayer, Arturo Ruiz, the previous day on a demonstration calling for the release of political prisoners. Police let his attackers escape and instead charged Ruiz’s fellow demonstrators. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1637521653099645/?type=3
