On this day, 22 January 1979, the winter of discontent peaked as a day of action was held by public sector unions in the UK and 1.5 million workers struck against pay restraint in the face of high inflation. Many workers stayed on strike beyond that day and eventually won big pay increases, like refuse workers and gravediggers.
