On this day, 2 January 1920, the second Palmer raids began. The raids were an attempt by the US Department of Justice to arrest and deport radical workers and left-wingers, especially anarchists. Some 6,000 were arrested and held without trial on January 2, and although most were released without charge, more than 500 foreign citizens were deported, among them most famously Emma Goldman.
You can read more about it in Goldman’s fascinating autobiography, here: https://libcom.org/library/emma-goldman-living-my-life https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1621574881360989/?type=3
