On this day, 18 December 2010, following the self-immolation of street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi, protesters took to the streets in Tunisia. The protests ballooned into a far-reaching social movement which eventually achieved the overthrow of the dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
